The Okanagan Valley is Canada's premier golf destination, over 40 courses, a desert climate, and a season that stretches from March to October. Here's everything you need to know before you play.
There are golf destinations in Canada with more famous courses. There are none with a better combination of climate, scenery, course quality, and sheer concentration of options than the Okanagan Valley.
Stretching from Osoyoos in the south to Salmon Arm in the north, the Okanagan is home to more than 40 golf courses within a three-hour drive. The region's semi-arid desert climate, Canada's only true desert, means a golf season that opens in late February in the south and runs comfortably through October. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35°C in Penticton and Osoyoos, and the valley's long sunny days produce some of the best golf conditions in the country.
They also produce some of the highest UV exposure levels in Canada. If you're planning a golf trip to Kelowna or anywhere in the Okanagan Valley, sun protection is not an afterthought, it's an essential part of your kit.
This guide is written by Enjoy the Vu, a UPF golf apparel brand founded and based in Penticton, BC. We play these courses regularly. We know the valley. Here's where to go and what to bring.
Kelowna Golf: The Heart of the Okanagan
Kelowna sits at the center of the Okanagan Valley and is home to some of BC's most celebrated courses. It's the natural base for any golf trip to the region, with a wide range of accommodations, excellent dining, and access to wineries that make the post-round experience as memorable as the round itself.
Gallagher's Canyon Golf & Country Club is consistently rated among BC's top courses. The main Gallagher's course winds through a dramatic basalt canyon, with canyon-edge holes that demand focus and reward precision. The UV exposure on this course is significant. The canyon walls reflect heat and UV back onto the fairways. Long sleeves are not just recommended here; they're the smart choice.
The Harvest Golf Club is set among working orchards and vineyards on the east hill above Kelowna, offering long views across the valley and what might be the best post-round view of any restaurant patio in the Okanagan. Almost entirely exposed to direct overhead sun, The Harvest is a beautiful and UV-intense round. Tee times before 9am or after 4pm are worth considering in peak summer.
The Okanagan Golf Club - The Bear & The Quail is a 36-hole facility on the north end of Kelowna, featuring a Nicklaus-designed Bear Course and the gentler Quail Course. The Bear, in particular, is open and exposed, a demanding course where the sun adds another layer of challenge. This is a course that rewards players who come prepared.
Vernon Golf: The North Okanagan's Crown Jewel
Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon is frequently cited as one of the best golf resorts in Canada. The two courses, Predator and Ridge, are carved across dramatic hillsides above Okanagan Lake, with views that justify the drive from wherever you're coming from. It is also, genuinely, one of the most sun-exposed golf experiences you'll have anywhere in Canada. Open hillside terrain, minimal tree cover, and full afternoon sun make this a course where arriving without proper sun protection is a decision you'll regret by the 12th hole.
Penticton & South Okanagan Golf
Penticton Golf & Country Club is a classic parkland layout in the heart of the city, walkable and well-maintained. The city location means there's slightly more natural shade than the open hillside courses, but summer UV index levels in Penticton are still consistently 8 to 9+.
Twin Lakes Golf Resort, just outside Penticton, offers a more relaxed valley experience with Okanagan scenery in every direction. A good choice for visitors looking to mix competitive play with a beautiful, lower-pressure round.
NK'Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course in Osoyoos is one of the most visually distinctive courses in BC, carved through genuine desert terrain with canyon views and cacti lining the fairways. Osoyoos records the highest temperatures of any city in Canada during summer. At UV index 10+ on a July afternoon, this is a course that demands serious sun protection. It is also, without question, one of the most memorable rounds you'll play anywhere in the country.
When to Golf the Okanagan

What to Pack for an Okanagan Golf Trip
Given the UV intensity of the Okanagan in summer, your sun protection kit is as important as your clubs. A local's recommendation:
- UPF 50+ long sleeve polo - covers arms and torso all round, the foundation of your sun protection. Lab-tested, not just labelled.
- UPF-rated wide brim hat - face, ears, and neck protection. A standard baseball cap leaves significant areas exposed.
- SPF 50 broad-spectrum sunscreen - for face, neck, and hands. Apply before the round and carry a small tube for the turn.
- Hydration - the Okanagan's dry desert air is deceptively dehydrating. A liter per hour in peak summer is not excessive.
- UV-protective sunglasses - essential for both eye protection and visibility on sun-soaked fairways.
Enjoy the Vu was founded in Penticton, BC. Our UPF 50+ golf polos are third-party lab tested and designed specifically for the kind of sun golfers face in the Okanagan. As featured on CBC News.
