I played Sunset Ranch recently, and the drive up Upper Booth Road tells you something about the round before you have hit a single shot. The course climbs into the hills on the south side of Kelowna, and by the time you reach the clubhouse, the valley is spread out below in a way that few courses in the Okanagan can match.
Sunset Ranch Golf & Country Club is a semi-private, 18-hole championship course established in 1990, playing to a par of 72 across roughly 6,500 yards from the back tees. It sits a few minutes from Kelowna International Airport, which makes it one of the more convenient tee times to book if you are flying into the valley, and one of the more memorable first impressions of Okanagan golf if it happens to be your first round in town.

None of that is the first thing you will remember about the round, though. The views are. From several points on the course, and especially from the clubhouse patio, the Okanagan Valley opens up below in a way that makes it easy to lose a few strokes just from looking up too often.
The Facilities
The clubhouse includes a 120 seat dining room, a 40 seat lounge, and two large patios overlooking the course and the valley. The dining room has built a solid local reputation, and a post round meal on the patio with that view is a strong argument for finishing your round here rather than rushing off after the 18th.
The facility includes a full pro shop, a driving range and practice area, and a golf academy with teaching professionals on staff for golfers who want a lesson before or after their round. Sunset Ranch operates as a semi-private championship layout open to both members and non-members from March through October, and regularly hosts weddings, banquets, and tournaments, including BCGA events. The clubhouse's valley views make it a genuinely popular choice for events beyond golf.
Sunset Ranch was named to Golf Digest's Best Places to Play in 2009 and was a finalist for Kelowna's Best Golf Course in both 2011 and 2013. That combination of recognition and consistency is part of why it stays on the shortlist for Kelowna golf trips even with the sheer number of courses competing for attention in the Okanagan.
Who Should Play Sunset Ranch
Sunset Ranch works best for golfers who do not mind a course asking something of them. The hills, the fast greens, and the tree lined fairways make this a course that rewards course management over raw power, and a higher handicap player who plays smart off the tee will often have more fun here than a big hitter who tries to overpower it.
If you are flying into Kelowna and want a round that gives you an immediate sense of why people golf in this valley, Sunset Ranch is a strong choice precisely because of the proximity to the airport and the view from the first tee. If you are a Kelowna local who has played the same handful of courses for years, the terrain here is different enough from the valley floor courses to feel like a genuinely different test.
Sun Protection at Sunset Ranch
Sunset Ranch sits above the valley floor, and the elevation adds a real factor to UV exposure that a lot of golfers do not think about. UV radiation increases with elevation, and the open, hilly stretches of this course leave you more exposed to direct sun than a shaded, tree lined course on the valley floor might suggest.
The Okanagan is already one of the highest UV exposure regions in Canada, and a hilly course like Sunset Ranch, with long uphill walks between shots and minimal shade on several holes, adds up to more sun exposure over four hours than the temperature alone would suggest. A UPF 50+ long sleeve polo, a wide brim hat, and SPF 50 sunscreen reapplied at the turn is the right kit for a full round here, particularly in peak summer when the climb up to the back nine puts you in direct sun for long stretches.
The view is worth the climb. Just make sure your skin is protected for the walk.
Getting to Sunset Ranch from Around the Okanagan
Sunset Ranch sits on Upper Booth Road South in Kelowna, close enough to Kelowna International Airport that it is a realistic option for a round before or after a flight. For golfers coming from Penticton or the south Okanagan, it is roughly forty five minutes to an hour north along Highway 97, making it an easy addition to a Kelowna golf trip alongside courses like Gallagher's Canyon or The Harvest.
